Art Department Aims
To help students view learning as a process which continues throughout their lives the art department-
- Educates students about arts careers.
- Supports older students portfolio preparation for university.
- Teaches exploring, responding to art and creating and making art as life skills.
- Uses visual literacy as a way of students to explore and interact with the world around them.
To celebrate our religious, cultural and social diversity the art department
- Uses practical and theoretical materials in art that are relevant to the students lives, including sources from local, regional, national and international cultures, with a focus on the traditional arts of Vietnam and South East Asia and contemporary art from around the world.
To develop a positive attitude towards and an understanding and knowledge of Vietnam the art department
- Sets practical and research projects for all levels based on Vietnamese arts and crafts.
- Has a focus on “Art out of School” which promotes students making and learning about art and/or in the local community.
To promote concern for the quality and care of the local and global environment the art department
- Uses materials sustainably, including recycling, and reusing waste materials to create art.
- Is developing units of work with an environmental focus.
To provide equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum to all students regardless of race, gender and ability the art department
- Has integrated classes where students with special needs are catered for using Individual Learning Plans that are developed to suit the needs of individual students with special needs, including EAL and students with disabilities.
- Has a flexible curriculum where plans can be changed based upon the needs of the students, teachers individual skills and the cultural context in which we are living.
To offer education in a genuinely international context to ensure transferability and continuity with other educational institutions the art department
- Has an educational focus taken from IGCSE and IB Arts Curriculum. The curriculum and assessment in grades 7-9 is based upon transferable skills in creating, making exploring and responding.
To provide students with opportunities to develop a strong sense of their own self worth and to strive for personal excellence the art department
- Student’s cultural backgrounds are explored and appreciated as part of coursework.
- Self Assessment is continually used as a way of the improving and reflecting on artwork.
To develop enquiring minds and an ability to question change and implement knowledge effectively the art department
- Questioning techniques are developed.
- Visual literacy is addressed not just in Visual Arts, but also in the world around us.
To develop in all students interpersonal skills which will serve them in a variety of social contexts the art department
- Group and pair work is encouraged as a teaching practice, in exploring, responding making and creating art.
- Students participate in collaborative art projects.
- Art room rules are developed around the concept of RESPECT. Respect each other, respect myself, respect materials and equipment, respect teachers and assistants.
